Last weekend the cities streets was filled with people enjoying the Flavors of the Foyle Festival in Guildhall Square.
Thousands turned up to taste the samples of seafood and more on offer and The weekend programme was headed up by TV favorite Paul Rankin and celebrity chefs Brian McDermott, Paula McIntyre and Emmett McCourt, as well as a whole host of local talent.
Seafood aficionados and novices alike turned out to enjoy the array of seafood on display – from squid lollipops to local fresh oysters - and to sample some of the many top class dishes rustled up by a selection of the city’s finest local chefs, in the giant marquee that dominated the square.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Elisha McCallion, said the event had been a major success for the city. “I was delighted to see the numbers at this year’s festival, and the assortment of dishes on offer showcasing our local produce was fantastic. It was great to see the many creative twists applied to the fresh produce by our local chefs, who certainly did the catch justice with their expertise.
“I also had a brilliant afternoon welcoming some of our younger citizens into the Guildhall on Saturday afternoon for my Family Fun Day. I would like to thank everyone for supporting my chosen charity the Alzheimer’s Society who were collecting on the day.
“Well done to everyone who made the weekend so successful for the city, it’s been my highlight of the summer.”
Tourism Officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council, and event organiser, Mary Blake, said she had received great feedback from the festival. “The Flavours of the Foyle has really established itself in our annual events calendar so it never fails to attract a crowd of local food enthusiasts and tourists alike.
